SPEAKER JIM KREIDER
MEDIA RELEASE

October 13, 1999

An Open Letter to the Community:

I have a long standing policy against interfering in local government affairs. I am a State Representative and try to stick to matters that affect you on the state level. However, I am outraged by the recent decision of the City of Springfield to condemn Robert Thompson`s 100 year old dairy farm. As a farmer myself, I cannot in good conscience remain quiet while a man`s entire life, livelihood and family history are forcibly taken away from him. It is my humble opinion that this decision is just plain wrong. Yes, an industrial park will bring revenue for local schools and that is important. However, there is other land available from people who are willing to sell. Forcing people off their family farms and away from everything they have worked hard to build is not what government is about. In my seven years as a State Representative, I have fought for, and the General Assembly has consistently enacted, policies to protect the rights of property owners. I strongly urge the City of Springfield to reconsider their actions against Mr. Thompson`s family farm. I do not believe the good citizen of Springfield and the surrounding communities will stand for this type of government intrusion. The next farm, or family home, could be theirs! Sincerely, Rep. Jim Kreider Speaker Pro Tem
