Dear Readers:
Our corner of the state is blessed with many wonderful attractions. Among the glitz and glamour of Branson, the outdoor wonders of Bass Pro Shops and the Wildlife Museum, and the arts and crafts of Silver Dollar City is the Wilson’s Creek Battlefield Memorial. This federal park was the site of the largest battle fought during the Civil War west of the Mississippi. It is rich in cultural heritage and a wonderful tribute to our ancestors, on both sides, who fought for what they believed in.
Wilson’s Creek is currently embarking upon an important project to expand its library. Upon completion, the library will be the largest civil war research library in the United States. Scholars and citizens alike will be able to use the library’s resources to uncover the stories and circumstance that surround this important chapter in our American history.
I am pleased that the state of Missouri has now done its part to make sure the library project receives adequate funding. This session we passed legislation to establish the Wilson Creek Battlefield license plate. This legislation will provide funds from the fee charged on these special plates to the library project.
What a difference a year makes. Last year, I stood on the House floor and opposed the state putting money into this project because I felt strongly that the federal government had not put in its fair share. As a result, the federal government stepped up to the plate with more funding. This year it was our turn to make good on our commitment, and we did just that without using taxpayer funds. So to all involved and especially those who have worked so hard for this important local and national resource, I say thank you.
Sincerely,
Rep. Jim Kreider
